Humans are mindless robots.

Scott Adams

As a designer in the fitness industry, I do a lot of thinking every day about human behavior, especially around diet and exercise.

There’s many helpful shortcuts to explain the actions of everyday people. B.J Fogg thinks about motivation, ability and triggers with his behavior model and Kahneman has his system 1-2 theory.

Then there’s free-will. According to this view, free will is an illusion, and we are all just biological machines, subject to cause and effect.

That’s so scary! But it also explains a lot.

So, it’s less about explaining rational’ actions (because we have no control) and instead looking at powerful influencers, whether thats the environment, design, habit, words, food that surrounds our daily lives.
