One illustrator you’ve probably never heard of is Clive Barker, because he’s known more for his words than pictures. He’s kind of a Terry Pratchet x Tim Burton in terms of visual style (gothic/mythical), but I vividly remember the self illustrated paperback Thief of Always. Creepy, creepy world that guy dreamed up.
